# Congeal setup

Public setup page: https://congeal.app/start
Companion machine-readable guide: https://congeal.app/start.md

## Order of operations

1. Optional: request a setup link from the homepage email field.
2. Create an account with your details and a paid Memory subscription (Memory checkout), or sign in if you already have one.
3. Wait until the signed-in setup page shows your personal connection address.
4. Add that address once in the assistant.
5. Sign in and approve access on your workspace. Allow **memory read, save, update, and delete only**—not broad workspace administration. Choose **Save and update memories directly** (recommended) or **Review each proposed memory**.
6. Use memory naturally in chat. Enable the connector when the assistant requires it. The provider may still ask in chat before using memory tools—approve those prompts when you want memory read or changed.

Do not ask the person to paste a password, email code, confirmation link, or session token into chat.

## Account

Already have an account? Sign in at https://congeal.app/login (no checkout).
New here? Create an account at https://congeal.app/register, enter your details, and complete Memory checkout.

## MCP URL

Each workspace has its own URL: `https://{workspace}.congeal.app/mcp`.
The signed-in setup page fills in `{workspace}` from the server session. If the person is signed out, ask them to open https://congeal.app/start and sign in. Do not guess a workspace, and do not send every person to one shared host.

## ChatGPT

Official instructions: https://developers.openai.com/plugins/deploy/connect-chatgpt

1. ChatGPT → Plugins → + → Add custom MCP server.
2. Paste the person's personal connection address.
3. Choose authentication / sign in, then create as a plugin.
4. Start a new chat and select that plugin.
5. Sign in and approve access when the browser opens on the workspace.

For scope fields when the client asks for machine-readable scopes, use `congeal.memory.read`, `congeal.memory.write`, and `congeal.memory.delete` (delete only when the person approves removing a memory). Do not request broad workspace administration scopes unless the person explicitly needs them.

At consent, allow memory read, save, update, and delete only. Choose **Save and update memories directly** for saves without opening Congeal each time. **Review each proposed memory** requires approval in the Congeal UI. ChatGPT may ask in chat before calling memory tools even after you connect.

If a connector form enables OIDC from a well-known alias, turn OIDC off (see Troubleshooting).

## Claude

Official instructions: https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11175166-get-started-with-custom-connectors-using-remote-mcp

Individual (Pro/Max): Customize > Connectors > + Add > Add custom connector, personal MCP URL, Sign in, published OAuth identity, then sign in and approve access on the workspace.

Team or Enterprise: an owner adds the connector under Organization settings > Connectors before a member connects.

Free includes one custom connector. After connecting, enable the connector for the chat (+ > Connectors). Claude may ask in chat before calling memory tools. With **Save and update memories directly**, the Congeal web UI is optional for routine saves. **Review each proposed memory** still uses the Congeal UI for approval.

Leave request headers empty. Do not put API keys or passwords in headers.

For machine-readable scopes when asked: `congeal.memory.read`, `congeal.memory.write`, and `congeal.memory.delete` with user approval for deletes.

## Other MCP clients

Other clients are not verified. Try only when they support a remote MCP URL and sign-in against `https://{workspace}.congeal.app/mcp`.

## Practical memory check

1. Save this exact rule: "Congeal setup test: when I ask for the setup codeword, answer only with the word plinth."
2. In a **new chat**, say: "Retrieve my Congeal setup-test rule and tell me its codeword." — the answer should match the codeword in the saved rule (do not paste the expected codeword into the prompt).
3. Revise that **same** memory to use a different codeword instead of saving a duplicate.
4. In another fresh chat, retrieve the rule again and confirm the updated codeword.
5. Delete only that test memory and confirm it no longer appears in search or recall.

No model guarantees it will call memory tools or obey saved rules in every reply.

## Troubleshooting

- ChatGPT: OIDC switch enabled from a well-known alias — turn OIDC off and retry.
- Connector added but nothing happens: enable it for this chat (+ > Connectors on Claude; select the plugin on ChatGPT).
- You chose review-only and want direct save: disconnect, reconnect, and choose **Save and update memories directly** at consent.
- Sign-in failed or expired: remove the connector and add it again from the start.
- Connection address shown but workspace not ready: wait after checkout, refresh https://congeal.app/start, then retry.

## Privacy

See https://congeal.app/privacy for how memories are stored and protected.

## Disconnect

Removing the connector in the assistant, or revoking it in Congeal, ends access. This guide cannot disconnect an account.
